Caring for Your Cotton Saree
A little care goes a long way. Cotton grows softer and more comfortable with every wear.
First Wash
- Wash gently and separately in cold water, with a very mild detergent only if needed
- A brief soak is enough
- Wash dark colours on their own
Washing
- Hand wash in cold or normal water
- No scrubbing or twisting
- Skip bleach and harsh chemicals
- Machine? Gentle cycle, in a laundry bag
Drying
- Dry in a shaded, breezy spot
- Dry inside out, away from long direct sun
- Let the water drip naturally, no wringing
Ironing
- Iron while slightly damp
- Medium to high heat, as the fabric suits
- Test first; keep the iron off delicate borders
Storage
- Fold only when fully dry
- Refold now and then; use breathable cotton bags
- Keep away from perfumes and moisture
Starching
- Dip in starch (rice starch works too), squeeze gently
- Dry in shade till slightly damp, then iron
- Go light on starch and test on a hidden corner first
